Review: Be Kind Rewind

Review: Be Kind Rewind - Directed by Michel Gondry
Rated PG-13 for some brief adult language
So what gets me to see a movie? If I haven't been following its production or pre-release hype, it's either because the movie has a great trailer or an interesting premise. Be Kind Rewind just so happened to have both.
In Michael Gondry's Be Kind Rewind, a failing VHS rental shop is on the verge of being demolished to make way for an urban renewal project. After an electrically magnetized Jack Black erases the tapes, its up to him and his buddy Mike (Mos Def) to re-shoot homemade versions of such classics as RoboCop and Ghostbusters.
The verdict? Premise holds up, but the story relies much more on the heart than the brain.
If you're expecting a side-splitting slapstick yarn, expect disappointment. There are moments of situational humor, but the bulk of the laughs come from the cheesy reinactments of cult movie scenes. Other than that, however, the story is surprisingly depressing.
Jack Black does a competent enough job playing himself for the umpteenth time and Mos Def is sufficiently pathetic as a nice guy trying to not finish last--but no one performance by the cast rounded out by Danny Glover and Sigourney Weaver is worth going into detail over.
If you really like RoboCop, Ghostbusters or Rush Hour 2, you will probably laugh a few times. But for most, this tongue-in-cheek criticism of formualic Hollywood will fail to leave a lasting impression.
