Review: Be Kind Rewind

Review: Be Kind Rewind - Directed by Michel Gondry
Rated PG-13 for some brief adult language

So what gets me to see a movie? If I haven't been following its production or pre-release hype, it's either because the movie has a great trailer or an interesting premise. Be Kind Rewind just so happened to have both.

In Michael Gondry's Be Kind Rewind, a failing VHS rental shop is on the verge of being demolished to make way for an urban renewal project. After an electrically magnetized Jack Black erases the tapes, its up to him and his buddy Mike (Mos Def) to re-shoot homemade versions of such classics as RoboCop and Ghostbusters.

The verdict? Premise holds up, but the story relies much more on the heart than the brain.

If you're expecting a side-splitting slapstick yarn, expect disappointment. There are moments of situational humor, but the bulk of the laughs come from the cheesy reinactments of cult movie scenes. Other than that, however, the story is surprisingly depressing.

Jack Black does a competent enough job playing himself for the umpteenth time and Mos Def is sufficiently pathetic as a nice guy trying to not finish last--but no one performance by the cast rounded out by Danny Glover and Sigourney Weaver is worth going into detail over.

If you really like RoboCop, Ghostbusters or Rush Hour 2, you will probably laugh a few times. But for most, this tongue-in-cheek criticism of formualic Hollywood will fail to leave a lasting impression.

The K-Files - Celebrity Theory

The K-Files - Celebrity Theory

I like the way Snrub thinks.

In my usual perusing of Internet esoteric, I came across the headline, “Blink 182 Star Latest Celebrity To Question 9/11” on Alex Jones’ Prison Planet website. Yes, you read that right—a pop/punk musician doesn’t believe the official government account of 9/11.

The K-Files - Rise of the Machines

The K-Files - Rise of the Machines

Come with me if you want to live.

Tell me I'm not the only one watching The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Fox. About as big of a Terminator fan as you're likely to find, I had my doubts about it. But so far this writer's strike mid-season gamble has done nothing but impress me. The series' take on the morality of robotics and high technology is refreshingly well developed for a television action/drama. Coupled with Ian Punnett's Coast to Coast AM interview with roboticist Daniel H. Wilson this past Sunday night, I've got robots on the brain.

The K-Files - UFOs on the TV

The K-Files - UFOs on the TV

I think I'm seeing double here...four UFO shows!

Turns out I was in fact seeing double, but two new UFO shows premiering on the same night--with the same title no less--is certainly an unheard of event. For The History Channel, UFO Hunters' premier was a continuation of that network's successful campaign to combat the stigma of 24/7 Hitler programming. For the Sci Fi Channel, their UFO Hunters was yet another attempt to bring in ratings with something other than wrestling or anime.

With two similar shows competing for your viewership, you're probably wondering which one is worth your time. Read on and find out...Full Article.
